Eye-Fi update

We’ve had the Eye-Fi here for several days now. I have to admit, they have user interface and initial setup for this device down cold. I was shocked at how polished and simple they made the entire process, but kudos to them for doing so.

After initial configuration, I had to “format” the card in my Canon Rebel XSi. Following that, I snapped a few pictures, and they magically made their way to Picasa, just as promised. Pretty cool.

I haven’t had time to look into the open source app that talks to the eye-fi. That’s next on my list though, as there’s a limitation to the Eye-Fi that I’d like to get around. While you can have multiple providers set up (Flickr, Picasa, etc) you can only upload to one of them at a time. I’d like to have pictures available for Maggie’s Flickr and my Picasa. I don’t even really care too much about them going online automatically, as much as having them on the server automatically. But uploading directly to the web is super handy.

A long time ago, Eye-Fi came to market. It wasn’t cheap at the time, but was a really neat concept. You take a picture with your camera, and voila, it’s on the web. Super cool. I’ve been doing more photography lately, and it’d be awfully convenient to have this kind of feature, so I was toying with picking up one.

Turns out Best Buy has the Eye-Fi share (their midrange card) on sale right now for $60. Throw in the $50 gift card that my lovely wife bought me for Christmas, and it’s a $10 toy. Not bad. Next up, though, I want to use it with linux, not windows. Now I’m stoked. I’ll get it working in Linux and I’ll get wifi direct from the camera. Stay tuned to hear how my experiences work over the next week.

Change is hard

After mucking around all morning with Fedora 11, I ended up putting Ubuntu 9.04 onto a disk so that I’d have something to work with tomorrow.

It’s not that Fedora 11 is bad, but it’s different. Different in that way where you switch which cabinets have the cups and plates, and you’re just annoyed that you keep looking in the wrong place for something. I didn’t erase the Fedora 11 disk, so I’ll try it out some more some other weekend, but I needed a workable system for tomorrow, that wasn’t causing me grief.

In other news, I purchased Left4Dead on Steam, and I see why people like it. It’s a bit gory for my tastes, but man, it’s just a lot of fun to knock down wave after wave of zombies with an assault rifle.

Maggie (my wife) finally figured out what pictures she wants in frames, so I spent half the day cropping, printing, and framing. Now we just have to decide how they go on the wall.
