Eye-Fi

February 26, 2009

A long time ago, Eye-Fi came to market. It wasn’t cheap at the time, but was a really neat concept. You take a picture with your camera, and voila, it’s on the web. Super cool. I’ve been doing more photography lately, and it’d be awfully convenient to have this kind of feature, so I was toying with picking up one.

Turns out Best Buy has the Eye-Fi share (their midrange card) on sale right now for $60. Throw in the $50 gift card that my lovely wife bought me for Christmas, and it’s a $10 toy. Not bad. Next up, though, I want to use it with linux, not windows. Turns out someone (very recently) came up with a standalone server in Python to do this: http://returnbooleantrue.blogspot.com/2009/01/eye-fi-standalone-server.html

Now I’m stoked. I’ll get it working in Linux and I’ll get wifi direct from the camera. Stay tuned to hear how my experiences work over the next week.
